Built on the site of the original Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the site is one of very few sites in the UK given the statutory designation as a ‘Scheduled Ancient Monument’. The historic significance of the site and the fact that the partial remains of the Globe Theatre lay buried beneath it meant that obtaining planning permission was a long, complicated and often controversial process. Extensive archaeological work had to be undertaken before construction could begin.
